Hills of My Home

Hills of my home I see so clearly
 Running from down south and way up north
 Committed now to my memory
 Hills of my home ain't there no more
 Machines have sat atop the mountains
 What they did we allowed them to do
 We closed our eyes all the while
 Now there's nothing left in our view
 Did we care for what was given us?
 Are we better off than before?
 How long can this crop sustain us?
 In the end where will we have to turn?
 You say we've been put to the purpose
 What we gave gone on to the greater good
 But the giving was never about us
 The greater good was never for the greater good
 And if there's money 'neath the ground I never seen it
 They took everything we ever had
 The soil and the streams above the coalfields
 Are but a scar now upon a broken land
 Did we care for what was given us?
 Are we better off than before?
 How long can this crop sustain us?
 In the end where will we have to turn?
