Mostly Fair Skies

after this i'm coming through
 with something new,
 just to return anything i stole
 from you, and this will bleed
 my doubt. when you saw the beauty
 it scared you right through me,
 but you needn't walk away.
 i just talk this way.
 and i think you'll find me
 quite through with several drinks.
 never meant to lend anything
 i couldn't leave, and i've seen
 you shy to your reckless side.
 the slight is that you hate
 what you retrieve. to collapse
 before retreat, you're pulling
 punches in your dreams.
 you're the cloudless sky,
 i'm the endless night,
 and i'll go to bed now,
 but i'll stay up thinking
 "could have been better,
 coulda/shoulda stayed up longer."
 and then just comes the day
 when you don't even try
 to find me, when you're
 back in town and you don't even
 like what you say you like.
